Description

We had to create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish a visual identity across the letterhead and business card identity.

Process

(Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)

  1. I first created a few different ideas for the logo. I did an abstract, modern and something that represented what the business does. All these were done in Adobe Illustrator.
  2. I then created two versions of each logo with the name of the business. Each version had the name as one line or split into two lines left aligned.
  3. I then played with various color schemes matching the logos and text colors on each. I ended up with three color schemes for each logo/name combo.
  4. I then asked my family for votes as to which logo they liked and I choose the one that was the most popular with them.
  5. I created the letterhead mock-up based upon that logo and created two versions of that with slightly different logo options.
  6. I printed each option out and decided on the final design.
  7. I made sure to follow the rule of alignment, repetition and good typography.

Critique

For my critique, I first submitted the initial draft onto the Facebook group for the teachers feedback. I then incorporated that feedback and then met with Jay Jorgensen and Debbie Miller to get their feedback and thoughts. I also showed it to a friend that is a professional photographer to get his initial reaction. I incorporated some of what they suggested. Some of the suggestions broke the rules of typography or alignment so those were not incorporated.

One of the comments made was what about putting the logo on a shirt or some other item. My reaction to that was that this logo will not be used on anything other than printed material. Marketing gimmicks do not work well with this type of business because they are overused. The color scheme can be reversed if the logo is put onto a dark background if needed or made monochromatic very easily if needed.

Facebook Critiques:Marci Grimaud andSarah Poche Madsen One-on-One Critique: Jay Jorgensen and Debbie Miller Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I remove the drop shadow and move the text that was next to logo on the back of the business card to be under the image like it is on the letterhead.

Message

The message is one of professionalism and trustworthiness.

Audience

This business is for anyone looking for an I.T. company that they can trust and expect professionalism from.

Top Things Learned

The top thing learned is that most people I asked have no clue about what an icon is supposed to do and how you get it to become a recognizable icon. Most of the big brands that are household names have spend millions of dollars getting their logo to become such. In a small market you need to convey something a little different and not so cheesy like most small businesses do.
