Comm-130 Magazine Cover Assignment
Ralph Borcherds
The description of the assignment was as follows:
We are new interns and have been tasked with creating a magazine cover. The cover had to feature ourselves as the main topic. We had to use good design principles with layout, color, alignment and fonts.
PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
The process that was used to do this assignment was a hard one for me. I personally do not like to have my picture taken, have people look at me etc. Deciding on the theme was a hard one in that I do a lot of very different things. Since the last four months most of my free time has been take by an upcoming Hamfest (Ham Radio event), I decide to do a magazine cover from one of the magazines for the hobby.
- I sketched out on paper four different concepts following examples from the magazines
- I then found the images that were to be used on the cover
- I edited the images in Photoshop and Gimp. I use Linux most of the day and at times it is easier to do the rough editing in Gimp and then open it in Photoshop and finish it
- I created a shape map in InDesign for the layout I wanted to use
- I brought in the two images for use behind the text
- I entered the text and changed the fonts the ones I had chosen
- I then imported a bar code and placed it
- Once done with the editing, I saved the Indesign file and exported it as a 300 px/in JPG file.
Palm Springs Hamfest February 4, 2017
This is an event that I have been working on since August 2016. The article will be about what it took to put the event on, contacting the vendors etc. Also about creating the website and maintain it.
Which HT is best for eComm support and in what terrain.
This is a question that I get a lot while working with the volunteers that report to me. Different types of radios with different types of antennas work differently.
Learn how to maintain your clubs' website
This is an article about my experience on how and what it takes to maintain the website for the Desert R.A.T.S. club in Palm Springs.
What not to do when taking your radio on horseback
This is from experience on what you can and cannot do while riding horses. I do a lot of horse back riding and ride almost every weekend. We have five horses. I have broken a few radios so I know what not to do.

The peer review process was very hard for me to get good reviews and critiques. The first good critique was from the video the teacher did that gave me some ideas.
All the other people I had asked could not tell me to change anything until I asked my daughter, Brittany. She told me to change the original background image because it looked weird with the antenna sticking straight in the air directly behind my head. So I changed it to what I have now.
