What makes a good social media campaign? This is an analysis of the one done by NASA called #AYearInSpace.
I analyzed #AYearInSpace that followed Astronaut Scott Kelly, spending a full year in space.
1. Describe the social media campaign, including the brand and objectives.
NASA’s #AYearInSpace campaign. This was about two astronauts that spent a full year in space and what happened to them. Astronaut Kelly constantly tweeted, posted content to Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and SnapChat. The objective was to bring to light what an astronauts in space does and to get more people interested in what NASA is doing. NASA did gained thousands of new followers. during this campaign.
2. Include links and screenshots as appropriate.
Reddit hosted an AMA session: https://www.reddit.com/.../i_am_astronaut_scott_kelly.../
Twitter Feed: https://twitter.com/StationCDRKelly/
Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/StationCDRKelly/
Take a look at the Twitter and Facebook feeds for some great images. Astronaut Kelly is still posting. On Twitter he has 4.5 Million followers and on Facebook he has just over 1.1 million followers.
3. Explain which principles were in play and how they contributed to the campaign's success.
Connecting on a personal level and showed what it really is like in space. The presentation was real and candid. The posts were directly from the astronaut and not edited. This is why users were able to relate. Everything posted, made the readers feel some sort of emotion most of the time to make them feel a part of what was going on.
